Originally from Denmark, my first overseas solo travel was a summer with family friends in the U.S. At age 13, this opportunity to experience life in Brooklyn, N.Y, including a few weeks at a local elementary school, set me on a completely new life path. Exploring Manhattan with my host family brother, climbing all the stairs in the Statue of Liberty (yes, at the time you could walk up all the way to the crown!), a road trip to northern Minnesota for a family vacation and seeing the great lakes, visiting Niagara Falls, and improving my English tremendously all became building blocks in my future journey. I had the opportunity to follow up this experience with numerous visits, exchange and direct enroll studies at U.S. colleges and universities, work experience - and eventually to building a life, family, career and future in the U.S.
